In order to solve problems in the forestry industry, Toyota Motor Corporation, in cooperation with Kochi Prefectural Forestry College and others, is working on developing laser mapping that combines lens optical technology and laser technology to cut down trees in a targeted direction.

The purpose of this system is to use laser projection mapping to draw a notch shape on the trunk of a tree, and then use the reference lines of the notch shape to assist in felling in the desired direction. In the future, it is expected to be used in classes at forestry education institutions and special safety and health courses, as well as a tool for chainsaw instructors.

The prototype has begun to be used as rental equipment at several schools and forestry associations in Japan, and has been unveiled at forestry work training institutions in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

The felling techniques that previously relied on the senses of experienced people have now been made visible, allowing even beginners to fell trees, which is expected to help alleviate labor shortages.
